This book totally hit the spot for a Halloween read! Witches, magic, mystery, suspense and a heaping helping of mother-daughter drama create a compelling story that's hard to put down! Single mother Liv, accepts a commission to paint a mysterious lighthouse and takes her three daughters along。 It is soon evident that there is more to the place than meets the eye。 Tales of witchcraft and trials, mysterious disappearances and dopplegangers the islanders call "wildings" and then two of her daughters go missing。 Twenty-two years later, her middle daughter Luna, is still trying to piece together what happened to her family that summer when she gets a call to say her younger sister Clover, has been found。 Thrilled, she goes to the hospital to see her sister, only to find that Clover hasn't aged a day since 1998。 Dun! Dun! Duuuuunnnn! Yep, I was hooked! Told by dual narrators - Liv in 1998 and her daughter Luna in 2021 - the pieces of the mystery fall into place a little at a time and reveal the truth of not only their disappearances, but the relationships between mothers and daughters。I loved this book。 I highly recommend to lovers of suspense, thrillers, time travel, mystery and supernatural stories。 Big thank you to Berkley Publishers for the chance to review this title。 This is the first novel by C。J。 Cooke that I've read and I was far from disappointed。 It kept me guessing well into the final chapters and delivers a satisfying end。 I can't think of anything in the story that I was missing or would want to change。 Add it to your TBR pile this October! 。。。more

Beautifully written, but the ending sags when the author suddenly replaces an impossible, 300-year old local myth that's driven the story with an equally impossible, pseudo-scientific explanation。 Beautifully written, but the ending sags when the author suddenly replaces an impossible, 300-year old local myth that's driven the story with an equally impossible, pseudo-scientific explanation。 。。。more

This book was the first horror book I have ever read, I set myself a goal to read a horror book in 2021 along with a Stephen King and originally my plan was to use a Stephen King book to tick off both but I originally see the cover of this book and through it was beautiful, it drew me in and when Harper Fiction sent out that e-mail saying they had a mysterious read along for Halloween and did I want to join in, you can imagine my joy when I found out this was the book and no longer had to have i This book was the first horror book I have ever read, I set myself a goal to read a horror book in 2021 along with a Stephen King and originally my plan was to use a Stephen King book to tick off both but I originally see the cover of this book and through it was beautiful, it drew me in and when Harper Fiction sent out that e-mail saying they had a mysterious read along for Halloween and did I want to join in, you can imagine my joy when I found out this was the book and no longer had to have it on my wish list。The cover is slightly different from the published copy but not to dis-similar and still as beautiful and eery。 When I started reading this book I could see how creepy it was going to be。 When you watch horror movies and it involves children, you just instantly know it’s going to be scary and that is what I felt with this book。 It has several stories throughout two timelines。 We are told of Liv’s story in 1998 of how she moved to the Scottish Highlands in the middle of the night with her 3 daughters, all of which went missing, we then have a story from years before that explaining the history of the island and the lighthouse that Liv is painting a mural in and then we jump to 2021 where Luna is the only sister left and is trying to discover what on earth happened to her family all those years ago whilst being heavily pregnant and coping with relationship problems with her partner, Ethan。It is packed with drama, twists, shock, disturbing stories all in a remote island in Scotland。 I’m Scottish and I adore when books are set in my home country, it helps with my homesickness now that I live in England and even though the island was scary, I enjoyed that it was in Scotland。I truly loved this book and I felt like it was a really good introduction to the horror genre and I’m now excited to read more in this genre and dabble in the Stephen King world。I rated this book 4* overall and I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to attempt horror or even if it’s a genre you love, i’m sure you will enjoy this book also! 。。。more

There was all this great build up and tension, but then the story ended waaay too quickly。 Everything tied up way too neatly, to the point where it felt like the first 90% of the story was almost wasted。

The Lighthouse Witches is a multi-narrative story which takes place over three separate timelines。 - In the 1600’s a group of twelve women were accused of witchcraft and persecuted on the remote Scottish island of Lòn Haven。- In 1998, Liv and her three daughters Saffy, Luna and Clover arrive on the island after Liv is commissioned to paint a mural in the lighthouse there。 The family get dangerously swept up in the local history and lore, resulting in the disappearance of two of Liv’s daughters。- The Lighthouse Witches is a multi-narrative story which takes place over three separate timelines。 - In the 1600’s a group of twelve women were accused of witchcraft and persecuted on the remote Scottish island of Lòn Haven。- In 1998, Liv and her three daughters Saffy, Luna and Clover arrive on the island after Liv is commissioned to paint a mural in the lighthouse there。 The family get dangerously swept up in the local history and lore, resulting in the disappearance of two of Liv’s daughters。- In the present day, Luna who is preparing to become a mother for the first time is desperately searching for answers about what really happened to her family all those years ago on Lòn Haven。I am half Welsh and half Scottish so I grew up hearing about and reading a lot of Celtic Folktales。 The thing I loved the most about this book was the way in which the fantasy and folklore elements were woven into an already creepy and unsettling story, combining two of my favourite genres。 I actually have family who live on a remote Scottish island, so the descriptions of the close-knit island community (set in their ways and traditions) felt incredibly real and authentic for me。I was also pleasantly surprised that overall the book took a very different direction than I had imagined。 I knew that witchcraft and witch-hunts featured heavily in the story。 However, I was only a few chapters in when one of the major twists completely stopped me in my tracks! I had to go back and re-read that section because it was such an unexpected turn of events。 It was one of those rarer moments in a book when you stop and think, well this just got interesting!Gothic, dark, surprising and utterly enthralling, The Lighthouse Witches is a really strong contender for my book of the year。 I got completely swept up in all three parts of the story and read excitedly through page after page, wanting to find out what happened but at the same time never wanting it to end。 Basically I adored everything about it - the rugged Scottish setting, the references to Witchcraft, the unexpected supernatural elements and the mystery of the missing family running throughout - all added together to make The Lighthouse Witches the most perfect and original gothic thriller。 。。。more

Does anything say spooky season more than witches? 🧙‍♀️🧙‍♀️ Well, I guess maybe ghosts or zombies or headless horsemen, but for now let’s talk witches。 C。J。 Cooke’s new release, The Lighthouse Witches is dark, it’s creepy, and it’s perfect for your October TBR。 Set in a creepy lighthouse that has more than a few secrets of its own, I made sure to read this one with the lights on and loved every page!

Overall I really enjoyed this novel。 I especially loved the elements of folklore, the mixed timelines, and the whole mystery of the island and the wildlings。 There were parts where my attention wavered a bit, but I think the mix of narrators and timelines helped to refocus me。 The whole tone of the novel was extremely well done and created such a sense of foreboding。 I totally bought into the legend of the wildlings and the mystery surrounding the disappearance of the Stay family had me completely perplexed。 I was drawn to Luna’s present day story and thought it was a great compliment to the 1998 storyline。 If you enjoy modern stories laced with history and magic then I definitely recommend this one! The Lighthouse Witches by C。J。 Cooke is a standalone gothic novel。 The story starts with Liv in 1998, when she accepts a commission to paint a mural in a 100-year-old lighthouse on a Scottish Island。 Liv arrives in Lon Haven, with her three daughters, Sapphire (Saffy), Luna and Clover。 While learning more about the strange mural that she needs to paint, Liv learns that underneath the lighthouse is a cave that imprisoned and burned to death women accused of witchcraft。 The local people tell her a The Lighthouse Witches by C。J。 Cooke is a standalone gothic novel。 The story starts with Liv in 1998, when she accepts a commission to paint a mural in a 100-year-old lighthouse on a Scottish Island。 Liv arrives in Lon Haven, with her three daughters, Sapphire (Saffy), Luna and Clover。 While learning more about the strange mural that she needs to paint, Liv learns that underneath the lighthouse is a cave that imprisoned and burned to death women accused of witchcraft。 The local people tell her about the wildings (created by the fae) that is the curse from back in the 1600’s hundreds。 Though we learn about what happened to the witches burned to death, the story centers around two timelines; 1998 and 2021; with Liv in 1998 and a grown-up Luna, in 2021。Though Liv doesn’t believe in the local rumors about wildings, and young children who return after time, but are not the real child, but a wilding。 In a short time, Saffy and Clover are missing, and Liv is desperate to find them, especially when the rumors are wild and crazy; and soon thereafter, Liv too is missing。 The story does go back and forth between the two time periods。The story moves to 2021, when Luna (the only survivor), gets a phone call that her sister, Clover has been found, after 20 years。 Ecstatic, Luna rushes to get to her sister, as she has searched all these years for her mother, Saffy and Clover。 To her shock, when they bring out Clover, Luna sees the sister she lost 20 years ago, and is still a 7-year-old child。Luna, despite her shock, does not reveal that her sister is different, and takes her home to try and ravel what is happening。 She will discover numbers on Clover, which have some kind of meaning。 With Clover being erratic, Luna decides she must return to Lon Haven to find the truth。 Is her sister a wilding or a witch? Are all those residents’ rumor real or myths? The Lighthouse Witches was a dark gothic paranormal haunting thriller that managed to creep me out a few times。 It was a wild story, filled with witchcraft (magic, curses, etc), which did keep me glued to the book (taking a few breaks along the way)。 To say too much more would be spoilers, as you need to read this from start to finish。 The last ¼ of the book revealed some amazing twists that put the pieces together, though totally mind boggling。 If you enjoy gothic, creepy books, I suggest you read The Lighthouse Witches, which is very well written by C。J。 Cooke。BarbThe Reading Cafe 。。。more

Perfect read for spooky season! CJ Cooke captures Scottish island life beautifully。 The story unfolds across different timelines and draws on historic witch trials。 I particularly enjoyed the folklore。 I listened to the audiobook which was brilliantly narrated by Eva Feiler, Lesley Harcourt, Jess Nesling and Joshua Manning。
